Battle Run Campground

Near perfect campground! From my perspective it is perfect, level sites, beautiful, on water, well maintained and not over crowded. A camp neighbor suggested it could use water and sewer hookups. Perhaps the most interesting story is that the dam and resulting reservoir submerged the entire town of Gad in the early 60s. More about the dam below.

The water has amazing clarity. A local publication claimed upto 75 feet of visibility. Perhaps this is possible under the right conditions, but I was still looking 30 feet down at these amazing rock formations. This would be a fun place to snorkle or scuba drive.

The submerged town was Gad, but they could not call it the Gad Dam, hence Summerville Dam, named after the nearest town. Every year they drop the level of the lake by 50 to 70 feet, to clean and inspect the dam valves and also prepare for the rainy season. The release of millions of gallons of water makes for crazy white water rafting.

I spoke with a man named Dave who had recently retired. Dave owns property in the area that has maple trees. A friend gave him a set of buckets and after a bit of research, he was in the maple syrup business. As a young man, he also put his name in large letters, “DAVE”, on the end of Long Point.

Note that the GPS track says 77 degrees, this was mid-morning in mid-July. The campground is surrounded by water that helps to cool the air.
